Abstract

173,446. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 22, 1921. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of low pressure.- Packing for a turbine &c. shaft consists of radial teeth on the shaft cooperating with teeth on the stator inclined to the direction of flow of leakage, and having flat peripheral surfaces. The radial teeth 9 on the shaft are formed with edges of reduced thickness, and are carried by a sleeve 8, shrunk on the shaft, and having a flange secured to a shoulder on the shaft by studs. The inclined teeth 19 are formed on or secured to packing-rings 16, 17, 18 formed in halves, and secured by dovetail joints in a sleeve 12; also formed in halves. The teeth 9 are closer together than the teeth 19, and the latter are formed with flat edges 21 cooperating with the teeth 9. The space between the packing-rings 17, 18 communicates with a leakage, chamber 14, while the packing-ring 18 is formed with two sets of oppositely inclined teeth, the space between which communicates with a chamber 15, connected to a source of low pressure.
