Abstract
226,378. Hamel, G. R. Jan. 7, 1924. Addition to 178,120. Aeroplanes; helicopters; planes, arrangement and construction of; propelling; steering. -An aeroplane having lifting propellers arranged within the thickness of the planes at their roots, as described in the parent Specification, has radial shutters above and below the propellers, the lifting propellers therein described are replaced by ordinary lifting-screws, and the balance of the machine is maintained by varying the thrust of the lifting-screws, by means of differential braking and clutching devices. The Figure shows two of four lifting-screws 1 arranged in recesses in two planes 4 arranged fore and aft of the machine. Four engines 9 drive two shafts 13, 14 through clutches 11, 12 each of the shafts being connected through a differential gear 15 with a pair of shafts 16, 17 driving the screws 1 through bevel gearing. Brake drums 18, 19 on the shafts 16, 17 enable the thrust of the screws 1 to be varied to control the lateral balance of the machine, and the clutches 11, 12 enable the longitudinal balance to be controlled. The shutters above and below the screws 1 are hinged about radial axes and overlap when closed so as to complete the upper and lower surfaces of the planes 4. The leading edges of the planes are swept back beyond the lifting-screw apertures to meet the trailing edge.
