Abstract
472,845. Controlling aircraft. MARTIN, J. April 3, 1936, No. 9897. [Class 4] An aeroplane wing is provided at its tips with ailerons adapted to be tilted about an axis in substantially coaxial alignment with the axis of the main spar of the wing and supported by means adapted to transfer the stresses set up by operation of the ailerons directly to the main spar of the wing. As shown, the aileron 2 is faired into the wing profile 7, 9 and its pivotal axis may be substantially coincident with an axis passing through the centre of pressure of the wing during normal flight, a power dive or through an average intermediate position. The ailerons may have an aspect-ratio of two and may betapered in plan. The ailerons are mounted on shafts 10 supported in bearings 11 in the main spar 4. Ratchet and pawl, clutch or differential gear mechanism may be incorporated in the control mechanism to permit the ailerons to float. The ailerons may be controlled by chain and sprocket mechanism. The whole of the trailing edges of the wings may be provided with flaps 14 and the trailing edges of the ailerons may be provided with flaps 15 operable simultaneously with the ailerons.
