Safety arrangements and connections.-In an electric railway with overhead conductors or third rails 3, 4 having different voltages or conditions of supply and separated by a road bridge 5 or other gaps, an additional conductor or rail 6 provided at the gap is permanently energized and is displaced from the normal position so as to be engaged by auxiliary collectors 13 on the vehicle 1. The main and auxiliary collectors 2, 13 lead to contacts 10, 14 which are connected to the motor contact in succession by switch 8. The rail 6 is connected by lead 7 to one of the conductors 3, 4. The shoe 13 may be moved to its position by the driver and may be geared to switch 8, contact 14 being dispensed with, so as to break the circuit of the collector 2 when the shoe is in use.
