Description

1 M&C FOLIO: 230P58872 "Process for printing a print carrier" 2221191
WANGDOC: 1443P The invention relates to a process for printing a print carrier on a printing press with at least one printing unit. comprising at least one cylinder carrying a forme, at least one inking unit for applying ink to the forme, and at least one rubber cylinder and/or impression cylinder.
Processes of this type are known. Thus in the offset printing process for example, use is made of a printing plate which has printing lipophilic areas and non-printing hydrophilic areas; which have practically no difference in level. The ink and damping agent applied adhere to printing plate. particular that i there must be an the corresponding places on the In this connexion, it is known in n order to obtain good printed products equilibrium of ink and damping agent. This equilibrium is quite difficult to achieve, particularly at the beginning of printing, as a result of which the occurrence of waste paper is relatively high, and the equilibrium can change during production, so that corrective action is required.
At the same time, marginal zone problems, which depend upon the thickness of the ink layer on the printing plate. occur on the printing plate at the 2 boundary between the ink and the damping agent. The greater the thickness of the ink layer. the greater the occurrence of dot enlargement during printing. This circumstance. however, can affect the intensity of the ink upon the print carrier. For this reason the thickness of the ink layer is set zonewise by way of ink-adjustment screws. for which purpose control means and setting elements are required.
The formes or printing plates used in the rotogravure process have pits etched or engraved in the printing area. These pits are arranged in a grid pattern. and the tone shading is achieved by the dimensioning of the pits. The ink taken up remains adhering to the entire surface of the forme. The non-printing. smooth areas of the forme are wiped off by a doctor blade which extends over the entire width of the forme. In the process the ink present in the pits remains on the forme and is transferred to the print carrier in the printing process. It is clear that the printing ink to be used is always supplied to the print carrier in the correct amount, as a result of which practically the first printed image impresses by its optimum quality. The edge zones of the ink dots, which are sharply differentiated, are also trouble-free.
On account of the demands of precision, during the gravure printing process massive and interchangeable forme cylinders, which substantially restrict the J 3 0 handling and the flexibility in this process, must additionally be used instead of individual plates for supporting the doctor blade.
What is desired is a printing process which permits stable ink separation for reducing waste paper immediately from the beginning of printing on the one hand and high constancy of quality with a given supply of ink and damping agent over the duration of production on the other hand.
According to the present invention, a forme etched or engraved according to the preliminary process customary in rotogravure printing has applied to it both printing ink and a damping agent for damping the forme and subsequently prints a print carrier.
A forme of this type can for example be fitted in an offset rotary press for printing sheet-form material. The forme may be damped quite minimally with a damping unit customary in the offset process. The ink may be applied with an ink-application roller to the forme in the layer thickness required for further processing. The pits engraved or etched in the forme are completely filled with ink. The ink does not remain adhering to the non-printing, previously damped areas.
The printed image may then be transferred to a rubber cylinder, which abuts against the forme cylinder, and from there to the print carrier sheet. The print carrier sheet is pressed against the rubber cylinder by 4 an impression cylinder or a second rubber cylinder, which can at the same time transfer a printed image to the reverse of the print carrier sheet.
The printed image may be transferred directly from the forme to the print carrier. without the intermediary of a rubber cylinder. In this case the print carrier sheet runs between the forme cylinder and an impre7ssion cylinder resting against it.
A damping unit can be dispensed with when the damping agent, which is used in a very small quantity, is mixed with the ink. These known "waterin-oil emulsion inks" have a proport:ion of water which is sufficient to damp the nonprinting areas on the forme in such a way that the ink cannot adhere to the surface which is lipophobic in any case.
The forme can have a multiplelayer structure. Thus, for example, the main surfaces of the pits can have a copper surface, and thus a lipophilic character, whereas the non-printing surface of the forme comprises a chromium layer. with a hydrophilic character.
It is also possible for the forme to be completely coated with chromium. The non-printing. smoothly polished surface does not take up water. In the pit-s, on the other hand, the ink remains suspended during the inking process on account of the surface profile and the pressure build-up in the roller gap, so that good printing products can be achieved even with a forme of this type.
It is likewise possible for a forme of plastics material to be used, the structure of which can be both single-layered and multiple-layered and which exhibits similar behaviour to the copper-chromium forme or the chromium forme, and which could also be processed by means of laser gravure printing.
