Abstract
680,436. Printing - surfaces. FISTAL, A. Aug. 1, 1950 [June 21, 1949], No. 16451/49. Class 100 (ii). A priiiting plate has recessed grease-receptive image areas of nickel or an alloy thereof and water-receptive areas of chromium or an alloy thereof; if the plate is formed of a discontinuous chromium or alloy layer covering a continuous nickel or alloy layer on a base metal backing it may be given a second life by removing the remainder of the chromium &c. layer, anodizing the nickel &c. layer to make it waterreceptive and then, in the areas corresponding to the new image, either removing the nickel &c. layer entirely (if the base metal backing is grease-receptive) or partially etching it away and lacquering the etched parts, e.g. with shellac. A single-life plate may comprise a chromium or alloy layer on a nickel or alloy sheet. The layers may initially be deposited electrically to depths of 0.0015 in. or less (e.g. 0.00015 in.) for the chromium or alloy, and 0.002 in. or less for the nickel or alloy in a double-life plate having an iron, zinc, tin, aluminium, brass, magnesium &c. base. The images may be formed photographically from positives, the non-image areas of the appropriate layer being removed by etching. Before printing the natural water and grease affinity of the chromium and nickel may be increased by treatment with a weak solution of nitric acid. According to the Provisional Specification the source of printing plates of base metal coated with anodized or alloy is not limited to salvaged chromium / nickel/base metal plates.
