Abstract

A drainage grating assembly comprises drain-attachment and grating-support components, interconnected via opposed, centrally-apertured, facially-engaging plate-members, normal to the axis, mounted one on each of said components so that they are capable within limits of being shifted laterally with respect to each other without interfering with fluid flow. The drain-attachment component includes a skirt 12, adapted to fit the mouth of the drain and the grating-support component includes a dished drainage-tray 25 adapted to receive and retain the grating 27. One of the opposed plate members is retained in sliding engagement with the other by an annular cover plate 19 bolted to an upstanding flange arranged around the periphery of the other plate member. Vertical adjustment is provided by threaded interengagement between a collar 23 and neck-piece 24 in the grating-support component. This construction is simple and cheap to manufacture, yet both effective and easy to use. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO DRAINAGE GRATING ASSEMBLIES The invention relates to drainage grating assemblies, and in particular such assemblies for use in conjunction with a drainage pipe, in which the grating can within limits be shifted laterally relative to the drainage pipe axis.
The drainage of water or perhaps other liquids from shower rooms and like areas commonly takes place through gratings set usually in the floor though perhaps elsewhere, and very frequently in a position where the drainage grating is to be surrounded by tiling, which needs to conform to some particular mosaic pattern.
Problems however arise in the positioning of such gratings to match up conveniently with any particular pattern of tiling in such situations. We are aware of nothing available on the market which helps to solve these problems; and that is scarcely surprising, since such previous proposals as we have been able to find by investigating the prior art seem to suffer from lack of flexibility and adjustability, as well as often undue complexity.
It is our aim to provide a drainage grating assembly of simple construction which however when set in position over the mouth of a drain opening can be easily adjusted to shift the grating laterally with respect to the axis of the drain opening, so as thus to permit the grating to be finally positioned so as to match the tile pattern as exactly as possible, and therefore with minimum modification or re-shaping of the tiles to match up with the grating.
According to the present invention there is provided a drainage grating assembly, comprising means for attachment thereof to the mouth of the drain, means for supporting a grating across the mouth of said drain, said drain-attachment means and said grating-support means being interconnected via opposed, centrallyapertured, facially-engaging plate-members, arranged normal to the axis of said drain and mounted one on each of said members so that said grating- support means and said drain-attachment means are capable within limits of being shifted laterally with respect to each other in a plane normal to the axis of said drain without interferring with fluid flow between the grating and the drain.
The drain-attachment means preferably includes a skirt, adapted to fit around and rest upon the mouth of said drain. The grating support means preferably includes a dished drainage-tray adapted to receive and retain a grating therein.
The opposed, facially-engaging plate members are preferably retained in sliding engagement with each other by releasable retaining means mounted upon the base member. Such retaining means may conveniently take the form of an upstanding flange arranged around the periphery of the plate member upon the base member to which there is releasably secured an annular cover plate, thus defining a slot between the base member aforesaid and cover plate within which there is retained the periphery of an annular flange upon the support member constituting the other opposed faciallyinterengaging plate member.
The support member preferably also includes a collar and a neck-piece threadedly-interengaged with each other, whereby the grating-support member and the base member can be adjusted relative to one another in the axial direction.
In order that this invention may be well understood, one specific embodiment thereof will now be described in more detail, though only by way of illustration, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a vertical cross-sectional view through the drainage grating assembly, as fitted in situ over the mouth of a drainpipe in a floor (before tiling thereof) and taken generally along the line of the axis of the drainpipe and assembly; and Figure 2 shows a plan view of a rectangular outline grating supported in the drainage assembly.
As seen in Figure 1, the assembly includes a base member 11, having a depending cylindrical skirt 12 fitted around a drainage pipe 13. The base member 11 includes an inwardly-directed extension 14, adapted to abut against the rim of the pipe 13 and support it thereof. The skirt 12 also preferably includes an internal annular recess which accommodates a resilient 0-ring seal 15.
Mounted upon the base member 11 there is a centrally-apertured support member 16, secured to the base member 1 by bolts 17, which support member 16 includes a generally-annular, horizontally-extending planar upper surface having the aforesaid aperture centrally therein and being surrounded by an upstanding flange 18, as well as a generally-annular horizontally extending cover plate member 19 removably secured to said flange 18 by bolts 20, so that the support member 16, flange 18 and cover plate member 19 together define a horizontally-extending slot 21 all around the periphery of the centrally-apertured support member 16.
Within the horizontally-extending slot 21 there is received a flange 22 of an upstanding collar 23, permitting the flange of collar 23 to be shifted laterally in the plane normal to the axis of the drainage pipe 13 and a support base 11.
This upstanding collar 23 is internally-threaded, and interengages with an externally-threaded neck-piece 24 depending from a dished drainage-tray 25 bounded by an upstanding edge-flange 26.
The dished drainage-tray 25 serves to receive drainage grating 27, which may be of circular, generally-rectangular (see Figure 2) or any other convenient overall outline, corresponding of course to the outline of the drainage-tray 25, in which the grating 27 rests and is retained by edge-flange 26.
With this construction of drainage grating assembly it will be seen that after the base member 11 has been fitted over the mouth of the drainage pipe 13, and indeed embedded in concrete 28, the drainage-tray 25 can be shifted laterally within the limits of slot 21, and vertically by adjustment of the screw-threaded interengagement between collar 23 and neck-piece 24, so as to adjust the lateral positioning of the drainagetray to conform with the pattern of tiling upon a floor of a shower room or other area which requires the drainage of liquid, therefrom, and so as to adjust its vertical positioning to conform with the level of the upper surface of such tiling.
This drainage assembly is of simple yet effective construction, therefore cheap to manufacture and simple in use on a building site, even by relatively unskilled labour; and its use largely or even wholly eliminates any necessity for unsightly modifications of tile patterns and the like, in order to fit the drainage grating in with its surroundings.
