Abstract

Dental engines.-A head for a dental drill or burr comprises a T-shaped casing in one arm of which a driving shaft 5 and gear 6 are mounted, and in the other are mounted a gear-ring 7, a tapered split chuck 9, ball bearings and adjustable caps for operating the chuck and adjusting the bearings. The gear-ring 7 is tapered internally to form a clutch with the chuck 9 which has a sleeve 11 extending through the cap 12 and is floatably mounted around the drill spindle 14 on a flanged ring 15 supported on ball bearings. Adjustment of the cap 12 forces the chuck into engagement with the spindle. The upper end of the spindle is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 17 which is recessed at 21 to form a guide for the gear-ring 7 and has a flange 18 forming with a cap 19 a box for ball bearings 20.
