Abstract

115,848. Poppink, J. H., and Bischoff, J. C. April 25, 1917, [Convention date]. Drilling - machines.-A device f o r transmitting rotary motion, at reduced or increased speed, is provided with a taper spindle surrounded by a concentric taper ring, and the tapering space between the spindle and ring contains balls making point-contact with both. The spindle may transmit motion through the balls &c. to the ring, which may be formed as a pulley or gear-wheel, or vice versa; or the ring may be fixed and the spindle transmit motion through the balls and a carrier to a second spindle in line with it. The invention is shown applied to a pneumatic rotary hand-drill for drilling metal or wood. A turbine disk 8, rotated by compressed air admitted through the handle 7, is attached to a taper spindle 11, between which and a fixed concentric ring 12 are four balls 13 separated by studs 16 carried by a second spindle 15. Between the spindle 15 and a fixed taper ring 19 are four balls 20 separated by studs 25 carried by a spindle 23, to which a drill may be attached. The balls are pressed into contact by an adjustable spring 26; the studs may be pivoted, and the spindle 15 may be prolonged through the spindle 29 for the attachment of a more rapidly rotating drill for wood. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the balls may be rotatably mounted on studs or replaced by other rotary bodies and that the spindle 11, 29 may be out of alinement. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
