Body motion and weight of rider, propelling by. - The saddle tube 1 is pivoted on the crank bracket 32, the upper end moving between a divided part 34 of the frame under the control of a tension spring 4 and a compression spring 6, which are mounted in the upper tube 3 and are secured to a member 5 connected by a rod to the tube 1. As the tube 1 swings backwards, an abutment 30, Fig. 2, on its lower forked part 33 moves a lever 20 about its pivot 21 thus causing a chain 12 to rotate a ring 14 against the action of a chain 13 and spring 10; a pawl 16 on the ring 14 thus rotates a ratchet-wheel 26 fixed to the crank axle 25. During the return stroke the chain 13 acts on a hook 27 to disengage the pawl 16.
