Abstract

672,171. Cycle driving - mechanism. WINDLE. J. F. Aug. 3, 1950 [July 31, 1950], No. 19078/50. Class 136(ii) A driving mechanism for bicycles, tricycles or similarly propelled vehicles comprises a main free wheel driving gear 2 which drives by means of a chain 3 a gear 4 of the fixed wheel type secured to the driving axle 5 of the vehicle, a secondary free wheel driving gear 10 in driving engagement with the chain 3, and reciprocating means operatively connected to the gear 10 and reciprocable as a result of the movement of the body of the rider when the vehicle is in motion to effect rotation of the gear 10 to drive the chain 3. The gear 2 is also operable by pedals independently of the gear 10. The gear wheel 10 is mounted on a stub shaft 9 slidably mounted in slots 7 formed in brackets 6, spring means urging the gear 10 into the position shown in Fig. 1. The teeth of the gear 10 are in mesh with the teeth of a jockey wheel 11 which is mounted on a stub shaft 12 slidable in slots 13 in brackets 14. The teeth of the jockey wheel 11 are formed by the links of an endless chain wound on a supporting hub. The saddle pillar 20 is slidably mounted in the cycle frame 1 and is urged upwardly by a spring 21. The shaft 9 of the gear 10 is attached to one end of a cable 25, the other end of which is attached to a bracket 24 provided on the saddle pillar 20. The weight of the rider in the saddle causes gear wheel 10 to move forwardly and the interengaging teeth of the gear 10 and the jockey wheel 11 produces a counter clockwise rotation of the gear 10 which will drive the chain 3. On release of the weight of the rider from the saddle the gear 10 is returned by spring means to the position shown in Fig. 1. To permit free movement of the gear 10 the stub shaft 12 of the jockey wheel 11 is mounted on a pivoted rod 15, Fig. 2, so that it may oscillate in a' vertical direction within the slot 13. In a modification applicable to a tricycle, as shown in Fig. 3, the oscillations of the saddle pillar 20 are transmitted to the stub shaft 9 of the gear 10 by a compression spring 28 and a curved link 29. The gear 10 is urged rearwardly by a spring 30 and guided in its sliding movements by a rod 31 which is pivotally connected to a crank 33. The stub shaft 12 of the jockey wheel 11 is carried by links 35 pivoted on the stub shaft 9 of the gear 10. The ends of the shaft 12 project through slots 36 formed in brackets 37 which are pivoted at 38 to the tricycle frame 1.
