Abstract

The effect of energetic ions on films of a chemical metal component on the surface of a substrate can change physical and chemical properties of said surface. By choosing the energy of the ions in relation to the thickness of the film, reactive mixing processes will occur at room temperature, when some of the ions penetrate the film and into the substrate. When the method is applied to a porous surface, metal may be embedded in the pores. The method can be performed in a selective way and applied on metal compounds, when the metal can act as a catalyst in electroless metal deposition, the method can be used to produce printer circuitry by a completely additive process within micro-electronics.
