Abstract

210,886. Hughes, C. Nov. 11, 1922. Air vessels; single-acting suction-valveless piston pumps ; regulating delivery by admission of air.-A pump for fuel &c. is provided at the end of the barrel with a spring- pressed diaphragm 10, which assists the delivery during the delivery stroke of the piston 2. The pump may be of the kind in which fuel &c. is admitted by a pipe 4 and a regulated quantity of air by a port 16, the mixture being compressed on the downstroke until the piston clears the upper end of a passage 6 connecting the compression space with the upper end of the barrel. The mixture then passes through the pipe 6 and is delivered through a pipe 5 during the next upstroke of the piston. The diaphragm 8 of an air pump 7 may be coupled to the piston 2 and pump air into the upper end of the barrel 1 to mix with the fuel. During its passage through the pipe 6 the liquid is acted upon by the diaphragm.
