Abstract

11,030. Roots, J. D. May 9. C y l i n d e r s receiving liquid fuel; vaporizers, external.-Liquid fuel is drawn into a pump simultaneously with a small quantity of air, on the compression of which it is wholly or partially vaporized prior to admission to a compressed charge of air in the combustion chamber. In the two - stroke engine, Fig. 1, on the downstroke of the piston, the plunger P draws in air from the atmosphere through the valve L and fuel through the adjusting valve L<3> and the suction valve L<1> on the end of the air valve spindle. On the upward stroke the air is rapidly compressed with the fuel, thus heating it and mixing with it, until, at the end of the stroke, the piston opens the double-seated valves M and the fuel is injected into air compressed in the cylinder. The explosion causes the valves M to seat upwards. In a modification, the pump plunger is driven from the crank-shaft if applied to a two-stroke engine or from a half-time shaft for the four-stroke engine. The Provisional Specification states that diaphragm pumps or pumps of two diameters may be used.
