Rolling.-In a rolling-mill wherein one of the rolls is normally driven by the action of the work, this roll is provided with hand-controlled friction gearing by which it may be temporarily driven so that the work may be inserted without shock. In Fig. 2 the driven roll U, and the idle roll 0 are respectively provided with friction members R1, R2 which are brought into engagement to drive the upper roll when required by means of a double lever H operated through a member T and threaded spindle S from a hand wheel H<1>. After insertion of the work a slot s in the spindle is slipped over a fixed pin b to disengage the friction gears, a spring f assisting the disengagement. In a modification, Fig. 3, a gear Z on the driven bottom roll engages a gear Z' fixed on the upper idle roll and bolted to a friction member S' which may be engaged with a complementary friction member on the upper roll by means of a screwed spindle s<1> acting through a spring f<1>.
