Abstract
A two stage jet separator (1) is used for separating materials of different molecular weight in the gas and/or vapour phase, e.g. a carrier gas from a gas chromatograph (2) to be examined in a mass spectrograph (3). The separator (1) comprises two chambers (4, 5) each containing two coaxial nozzles facing each other at a small distance, viz. inlet nozzles (7, 9) and outlet nozzles (8, 10), the outlet nozzle (8) of one chamber (4) being connected to the inlet nozzle (9) of the following chamber (5), Each chamber (4, 5) is connected to a pump via an exhaust tube (11) and adjustable valve (14). The separator (1) is made of metalfree material, such as glass, and has no movable parts. Adjustment of the valves (14) in the exhaust tubes (11) controls the degree of separation and yield. The valves (14) can be placed independently of the separator body (1), which can be arranged for thermostatically control without any mechanically movable and thermal conducting adjustment means passing through the insulation. <IMAGE>
