Abstract

<PICT:0818703/III/1> Apparatus for vapour phase chromatography consists of a plurality of tubes 1 filled with a porous material and mounted between inlet and outlet headers 10, 18, the inlet header and tubes each having a jacket through which a cooling or heating fluid passes. The gas mixture to be separated enters through a pipe 13 and is distributed uniformly by a baffle 15 to injectors 11. The charged tubes of which there may be about 50, are then treated with eluting gas fed from a chamber 8, and the elements pass to the common header 18 in which is mounted a baffle 20 which provides equal paths for the gases passing through a tube 19 to the collectors 21. The gas fractions may there be condensed. A device 23 is responsive to changes in concentration of entrained vapours, is preferably of the thermal conductivity type and is used in a circuit giving pulsed electrical signals as described in Specification 818,704, [Group XXXV]. The pulsed signals operate valves 22 directing the eluted gases to a selected collector, in response to variations in the control device 23. The valves are described in Specification 818,705, [Group XXIX].
