Abstract

The apparatus includes a mandrel having a cylindrical end portion over which the workpiece is fitted and an adjoining tapering portion 12, and a convex base forming tool 5. As the mandrel advances towards the forming tool 5 a rigid ironing ring 2 surrounding the mandrel engages the workpiece to iron and thin its wall, the material at the end of the wall being pressed against the tapered part 12 of the mandrel to form a thickened end 11. On contact with the forming tool 5 the base 9 of the workpiece is pressed into a cavity in the mandrel and the thickened end 11 moves along the mandrel, Figure 3 (not shown), and is expanded. A stripping ring 3, disposed between the ironing ring 2 and the forming tool 5, engages the thickened end of the workpiece on the return stroke of the mandrel to strip the workpiece from the mandrel. The ironing and stripping rings may be combined to form a single ring. <IMAGE>
