Abstract

A hydraulic valve tappet (100) comprises a tubular housing (112), and a piston (113) abutting a socket (114) and both slidable in the housing. A pressure chamber (126) below the piston crown (113A) is controlled by a non-return ball valve (116, 115A). Pressure oil from the engine lubrication system is admitted into the housing and can enter the chamber through the valve and be trapped therein to maintain normal valve clearance. A sliding plunger (133) is spring-biassed towards the piston crown and engages the ball (116) to open the valve and vent the chamber (126) when the oil pressure in the housing is below a threshold value, thus collapsing the tappet and increasing the valve clearance above the normal running value. When the oil pressure in the housing exceeds the threshold value it overcomes the plunger spring and lifts the plunger, allowing the valve to close and trap oil in the chamber, so reestablishing the normal valve clearance. Thus for starting up, the tappet provides increased valve clearance so long as the oil pressure is low, thereby facilitating starting by shortening the valve opening period. <IMAGE>
