Abstract

A shaft sealing unit comprises a casing (3) for fitment in a recess in a stationary machine part and houses primary and secondary seals (10, 11) of which the former is loaded by a spring (6) into sealing abutment with a counter ring (5) intended to be secured to a shaft rotatable relative to the stationary machine part, there being a cup- shaped holding member (1) releasably attached, as at (2), to the casing (3) adjacent the periphery thereof and extending between such casing and that side of the ring (5) remote from the casing to hold the ring (5) in sealing relationship with the primary seal (10). The holding member (1) is automatically releasable from the casing (3) on engagement of such casing in the recess and serves also to locate the ring (5) on the shaft during fitment in the recess, thereby substantially maintaining a requisite relative disposition of parts during fitment. <IMAGE>
