Abstract

A rigid frontal sealing ring 4 is axially slidably within an annular, cylindrical, housing 1 which has an open end and an annular base wall 2 at the opposite end. The sealing face 5 of the ring projects from the housing through an annular cover 9 disposed across said open end. The annular cover has a peripheral flange 10 constituting a stop for locating the seal assembly against a seat. The ring 4 is urged towards the said open end by a helical spring 3 interposed between it and the base wall 2 of the housing, and a toroidal resilient element (O-ring) 7 for lateral sealing is interposed between the outer cylindrical surface 4'' of the ring and the lateral cylindrical wall 1' of the housing.The sliding ring 4 is prevented from rotating by means of lugs 12 projecting from the base wall of the housing, which engage in axial guide grooves 13 formed in the ring. Alternatively the lugs may extend inwardly from the cover.
