Abstract

197,515. Campbell, C. W., and Cockroft, F. April 24, 1922. Pie-moulding machines of the type described in Specification 178,161 are adapted to mould large pie shells of circular or oval shape by (1) fixing the female die to the machine frame by clamps operated by cams on a horizontal shaft or by an eccentric shaft and (2) providing in the air chamber in the reciprocating spindle d carrying the male die of a piston having a shaft which extends above the end of the spindle. The female die m is supported on an intermediary block it having a cushioning-ring V and a T-shaped projection t which works in a corresponding slot s, and is held in position by clamps r which engage a flange m<1> and are adjustably mounted 'on bolts n. The latter pass through vertical bushed bearings in the frame and are operated by a horizontal shaft j, which is provided with cams or is eccentrically mounted in extensions n<1> of the bolts n. A piston 7 is supported in the central chamber of the spindle d by means of a shaft 1 which projects above the spindle d. Two three-armed levers are each pivoted by one arm to a bearing 13 and are provided with vertical arms 13b which hold the piston 7 in its upper position during the downward stroke of the spindle by engaging with a projection 12 formed in the end of the shaft 1. The horizontal arms 13a of the levers are joined by a cross piece 14 passing through a spring- controlled piston 15, which is depressed by contact with a finger piece 10 mounted on a gland 2 on the spindle, so as to withdraw the arms 13b and release the shaft 1, the piston 7 being then operated by the spring 9 so as to force out air between the male die and the moulded shell.
