Abstract

191,633. Laird, A. J. Feb. 7, 1922. Spray carburettors.- Rich mixture passes through a slidable tube 10 the upper end of which constitutes a secondary air valve with a valve-seat 14; the tube 10 also carries a plug 21 which constitutes a throttle valve with a valveseat 22. The end of the tube 10 should be fared as shown and the plug 21 and the valve-seat 14 should both be either conical or parabolical. Fuel is supplied from a nozzle 8, the delivery from which may be controlled by a needle valve, and the primary air supply may be adjusted by axial movement of a tube 9 which is preferably parabolic in section as shown. The tube 10 has a shoulder 17 on which rests a ferrule 18 to which is screwed the plug 21. The plug 21 is extended to form a conical baffle 20. Part of the sides of the plug 21 may be cut away so that the throttle may open more rapidly at first. The tube 10 is moved by a control lever having a slot which engages a pin attached to the tube. The valve-seat 22 is independently adjustable to admit a rich mixture at starting. The tube 9 may be connected to the control lever of the tube 10 with the interposition of a time lag so as to give a richer mixture automatically at starting and a weaker mixture at stopping. Compressed air may be used as the secondary air supply.
