Abstract

11,727. Cloudsley, J. L. May 12. Force - feed lubricating. - In a lubricating system for two or four stroke cycle internalcombustibn engines, the oil coming from the cylinders, 'main bearings, &c, that is burnt or contaminated is kept separate from the oil that requires only straining before being used again, such as that from the cam-shaft, bearings. A pump D in a reservoir D<2> supplies oil to a central conduit B' in the crank-shaft B, communicating by branch pipes B<2> with the bearings, gudgeon pins, cylinders, &c. At the end of the shaft remote from the pump, the oil passes through a pipe E to an adjustable spring-controlled pressure-reducing valve F, from which it flows to the cam-shaft bearings C' and similar parts. By adjusting the valve F, the proportion of oil flowing to the different parts of the engine can be regulated..The oil that escapes from the bearings C' passes through a strainer and returns to the reservoir D<2>. The oil that collects in the crank casing is either .discharged or subjected to a purifying process. The oil that escapes from the end of the crank-shaft bearing returns to the reservoir through a pipe B<4>.
