Abstract

Fixed-abutment type; packing drums and vanes; balancing moving parts.-In a rotary engine &c. of the hinged-vane type, the rotor 14 and its end flanges 13 are provided respectively with pockets 31 and recesses 32 having shoulders which limit the outward swing of the vanes 16, Figs. 7 and 8, so as to eliminate pressure between the inner periphery of the casing and the vanes; the working fluid trapped in the pockets 31 serves to prevent hammering of the vanes. The vanes may be swung into the working position by steam &c. admitted by a pipe 42; they may also be controlled by a fixed cam 45 engaging rollers 47 carried by arms 48 secured to the vane spindles 17. The flanges 13 run in suitable recesses 15 in the casing, and are fitted with grooves 25 which receive spring-pressed packing-rings 26; the vanes may carry spring - pressed packing 50, Fig. 8, controlled by stops 53. The centrifugal force on the vanes is balanced by providing them with an enlarged axial portion. The working fluid is admitted by a slide valve 21 and exhausted through a port 41.
