Abstract

Fixed-abutment type; back-pressure, reducing; packing drums, vanes, &c.-In a rotary engine or pump having a diametrical outwardly-sliding vane 8, one end of the vane is provided with grooves 12, Figs. 2 and 8, to enable the working - fluid to pass this end of the vane and so avoid detrimental trapping in the cylinder between the two ends of the vane. The vane is provided with a spring-pressed or fluid - pressed packing- piece 9. The bearing- blocks 14 of the rotor may be fitted with packing-strips 28, 29, Fig. 10, pressed by pressure fluid admitted to ducts 30 by an annular recess 31 registering with a casing port. Springs 32 may be provided in addition or alternatively. The abutment may be packed by a fluid-pressed strip 11 set obliquely with respect to rotor axis. Alternatively the strip 11 may be fixed and the rotor resiliently pressed against it. The rotor may be cast in halves. Three engines, each with its vane advanced 120 degrees with respect to its neighbour, may be connected in series and coupled to the same shaft.
