Abstract

151,448. Frost & Co., A., and Howson, H. A. Aug. 23, 1919. Movable-abutment type; packing drums, vanes, abutments, etc.; valves, distributing and cut-off; working-fluid supply.-A rotary engine or pump has a rotor eccentrically mounted on a central shaft and surrounded by a ring mounted on antifriction bearings. The rotor revolves on a cylindrical casing which is divided into separate chambers by abutments arranged diametrically opposite to each other, the abutments being spring controlled and recessed at the inner ends to receive oscillatory hemispherical blocks. The casing 1, has a central shaft 2 carrying the rotor which consists of an eccentric disk 3 surrounded by a ring 5, mounted on anti-friction bearings 4. Packing pieces 6, which are made in halves, stepped and tongued, and forced outwardly by springs, are fitted around the annular ring 5. Packing rings 8 are fitted to the rotor. Sliding abutments 12, with hemispherical packing blocks 11, divide the casing into two or more working chambers,. and are pressed outwardly by springs 13. The blocks 11 may be rigidly fixed to the ring 5. Suitably arranged ports 17 in the slide 12, acting in .conjunction with slots in the circumference of the blocks 11, form the valves when used as an internal combustion or steam engine. When two elements are used, one compressor and one power, the fluid may be admitted through passages 19 which register with ports 18 in the slide 12. When used as an internal-combustion engine, fluid enters the'chamber 21, through the passage 22. It is fixed by a plug at 23 and exhausted by a port 24.
