Abstract

18,712. Babcock & Wilcox, [Babcock & Wilcox Co.]. Aug. 19. Liquid, gaseous, and pulverulent fuel fournaces. - To ensure thorough mixture of fuel and air for combustion, the air is admitted in a whirl, into the centre of which the stream of fuel is projected. The whirl is imparted to the air by an opening in the furnace front of propellerlike form, and the burner supplied by the pipe 1, terminates in proximity to the centre of this opening, Fig. 2. The 'propeller' blades may be integral with their supporting-plate, or they may be detachably secured thereto and be also adjustable, and they may be radial or tangential to the central burner opening. Further, the blades may be arranged in concentric series alternately right and left handed. In one such construction, Figs. 16 and 17, each blade is composed of a metal strip bent upon itself so as to form two portions b, d at right-angles to each other with a double-folded central portion a at right-angles to the plane of the 'propeller.'
