[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A mixture of pulverized fuel and air is supplied tangentially through pipes 12, 13 to two chambers 41, 47 and is discharged through concentric nozzles 40, 45 to mix with heated secondary air supplied through a wind-box 33 to a frusto-conical burner ring 32 arranged above a flaring port 30 at the top of a steam generator furnace such as is described in Specification 503,775, [Group XIII]. The chambers 41, 47 have volute-curved peripheral walls 42, 48 and conical bottoms 43, 46. A bladed impeller 50 is arranged at the discharge ends of the nozzles. An oil burner barrel 63 may be inserted through an adjustable hollow rod 52 carrying the impeller. The inner nozzle 45 and impeller 50 are removable together through an opening 56 in the chamber 41. Curved vanes 37 are so arranged in the wind-box as to effect a substantially uniform circumferential distribution of the air supplied to the port 30 with a minimum pressure drop, the air being caused to rotate in an opposite direction to the fuel and air mixture discharged from the nozzles 40, 45. The pipes 12, 13 may be connected to a single or separate pulverizer and are fitted with cutoff valves so that the fuel mixture can be supplied to either or both of the nozzles 40, 45. The furnace chamber walls are cooled by a steam-generating continuous tube coil 28 formed of relatively small tubing having metal studs welded thereon and covered with initially plastic chrome ore refractory.
