[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-The shafts of steam and gas turbines and compressors &c. are packed by flexible rings forming a groove or labyrinth packing. The flexible rings a' ... a<6>, Fig. 1, are preferably conical, with their apexes inclined towards the pressure. The angle of the cone is chosen to suit the pressure. The rings are separated by spacing-rings b' ... b<5>, or may alternatively be secured in grooves in a solid bush, and the shaft may be protected from wear by a surrounding sleeve. Fig. 4 shows the packings at the high-pressure end H and the low-pressure end N of a turbine. In each case, a space in the box is maintained at a pressure slightly above that of the atmosphere, and the angle of the rings is directed towards the greater pressure. In a modification, the flexible rings are arranged at right-angles to the shaft. and rub on collars on the shaft.
