Abstract

1042. K÷nig, W. Jan. 15. Stuffing- boxes.- Relates to packing allowing lateral motion and suitable for resisting high temperatures and pressures, e.g. in a gas engine or an engine using superheated steam. The packing is held in boxes a, d, &c. The lowest packing-ring is a split ring c, undue expansion of which is prevented by a solid flanged ring b. The next packing-ring is a segmental ring e pressed on to the rod by radial springs h or a circumferential spring f. In order to prevent over-heating of the spring , it rests on two edges as shown. A solid ring i for receiving lubricant is placed in the middle of the stuffing-box, and above it are two pairs of rings k, l, each pair arranged to break joint and prevented from relative rotation by a pin u. Each ring consists of triangular segments v, Fig. 5, and segments r with tangential edges. The circumferential springs near the cylinder are stronger and under greater tension than those in the outer part of the stuffing-box.
