Abstract

722,753. Controlling change-speed gearing. REIS, S. July 28, 1952 [Aug. 1, 1951], No. 18992/52. Class 80 (2). The gear lever 31 of a motor vehicle has pivoted to its lower end a lever 1, the upper end of which engages a slot 5 in a gear rod 6 while its lower end engages a slot 7 in a ported sleeve 8 normally held centrally on a hollow ported member 9 by opposing springs 24, 25 so that liquid supplied by a pump 29 flows freely through the registering ports 22, 23. Recesses 10, 13 in the rod 6 and in a spring-loaded rod 12 co-operate with a slidable locking pin 11, rod 12 being connected, with lost-motion at 21, to the clutch disengaging lever 19 operated by a piston 27 in a cylinder 26. With the parts in the neutral position shown, the clutch 20 is engaged and rod 6 is locked by pin 11. If lever 31 is moved clockwise (or anti-clockwise), lever 1 reacts against the locked rod 6 and moves sleeve 8 to the left (or right) to bring the ports 22, 23 out of register. The pressure liquid thus passes to cylinder 26, causing first disengagement of clutch 20 and then movement of rod 16 to the left, so unlocking rod 6. On continued movement of lever 31, rod 6 then moves left (or right) to engage a gear. On release of the lever 31, sleeve 8 returns to central position, causing clutch engagement lever 31 moving back slightly towards central position. If lever 31 is now moved back to neutral position, rod 6 moves back to neutral but the clutch 20 remains engaged. Pin 11 now disengages from recess 13. and engages recess 10, so that rod 6 is again locked in neutral position, and, on again moving lever 31 from neutral position, the clutch is first disengaged. The lever 19 may also be connected to the engine throttle so as to reduce the throttle opening when the clutch is disengaged.
