Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-The packing - boxes of turbines or rotary engines are made in two parts in order that the split packing-bushes may be easily inspected or removed ; the upper part or both parts are removable. The bushes may be stepped conically, and in some cases are provided with means for fine longitudinal adjustment. Split parking - rings in grooves in the shaft may be used in connexion with the conical bushes. The lower half d of the box shown in Fig. 3 is formed in one with the turbine casing or cover b, while the upper partf is removable. The shaft i may be packed by circumferential grooves or by rubbing collars, and the part of the shaft in the box may be cylindrical, or conical as shown. The bush h can be adjusted longitudinally by nut n entering a groove in a ring o secured by bolts. Leakage between the box and the bush is prevented by a ring r compressed by a gland q acted on by studs p. In a modification, the bush h is formed with a flange through which pass studs slotted for cotters by which the bush is adjusted ; or the bush may .be adjusted by toothed nuts operated by a central spur-wheel or toothed ring. In the latter case, the shaft has a circumferentially-grooved cylindrical part containing packing-rings and a conical part with rubbing collars.
