Abstract
4545. Barrett, W. Feb. 24. Spring surfaces for chairs, couches, mattresses, &c., Figs. 1 and 3, comprise a number of spiral springs a, c, d, of usual constraction, the lower convolutions of which are strengthened by diametrical stays a<3>, c<3>, d<3>. The springs are connected together at their lowest convolutions by rigid links e, f, g, and are connected by yielding stays i to the frame h of the chair or couch. The links and stays e, f, g, i are formed with hook ends to facilitate attachment to the springs, the hooks being afterwards closed down to prevent the links or stays from becoming detached. The upper convolutions of the springs a, c, d are sewn to the canvas covering j, Fig. 3, and may, in addition, be connected together by links such as e,f, g. The links i may be formed with loops to permit them to yield easily when the springs a, c,d are compressed. When applied to mattresses, the mattress is made in the form of two square frames hinged together, each of which is upholstered as described.
