IMPROVEMENTS IN BED-BOTTOMS.

, Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 160,] 85, dated February 23, 1875 application filed December 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY S. HALE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to make a uniformly flexible, comfortable, and strong bed-bottom by combining with any ordinary system of metal springs B a series of slats, a2, placed side by side, and cemented to canvas or other suitable fabric 3 as illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical section of sufficient of the bed-bottom to illustrate my improvement 5 Fig. 2, a plan view of part of the bed-bottom, with a portion of the slatted covering re moved; and Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional view of part of the covering.

A light frame, A, composed of longitudinal slats b and transverse slats b, constitutes the base of the bed bottom, ordinary helical springs B B'being secured to the transverse slats, and these springs being attached at the top to flexible bars cl, which are riveted or otherwise attached to the flexible covering.

Any ordinary arrangement of wire springs may be adopted in carrying out my invention, and the springs may, if desired, be connected directly to the slatted covering, which consists of a series of light and narrow wooden strips, 00 or, placed side by side, and glued or otherwise connected to canvas y or other suitable fabric.

This covering possesses within itself such elastic and flexible properties that it will readily accommodate itself to the recumbent form of the sleeper; at the same time it counteracts the abrupt local action of the metal springs B in other words, the bed-bottom, consisting of the metal springs combined with the flexible slatted covering, constitutes a bed-bottom possessing all the desired resiliency, which is equalized and rendered uniform throughout by the said slatted covering.

I claim as my invention A bed bottom consisting of a frame, A, metal springs B, and a covering composed of slats cemented to a suitable fabric, all being combined substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. A
