9239. Tamplin, H. L. April 22. Chairs; couches; bedsteads.-A chair is so constructed as to be readily convertible into a bedstead or a couch. A square or oblong base a, supported by legs a, has an arm c attached to each side by hinges b ; a part f is also attached by hinges g to the front part of the base ; and a back d is attached by compound hinges e to the back part of the base. When in use as a chair or a couch, the arms c and the back d are interlocked in the desired position by fitting part of the sides of the back into one of a series of grooves c<11> formed in the arm rail c', and turning down a catch h. The catch may be replaced by a spring-catch, or other arrangement. When used as a lounge-chair, bed, or couch, the part f is supported by a piece i hinged at f<11> and held in position by chains j or other means. The part f may be turned over on its hinges g on to the part of the base a forming the seat, the cushions a<11> being taken off and afterwards replaced. When used as a bed, the back d is disconnected from the arms c, which turn downwards and out of use on their hinges b, and the back is turned down into a horizontal position and supported by a piece k which is hinged at k<1> and held secure by a trebly-hinged piece l. When out of use or packed up for transit, the cushions may be removed and the front and back folded over on to the base, and the arms down to the sides.
