Abstract
170,249. McCrudden, J. C. R. July 6, 1920. Machine guns. - Combined means for inducing a draught of cooling-air over the barrel, observing the flash of discharge, and silencing the explosion report, comprise a helically-finned aluminium radiator 3 surrounding the barrel 2, a flared muzzle-attachment 7 and a conical tube 18 all arranged within a casing 4. As the projectile passes the rear end of the cone 18, the gun gases escape into the annular passage 30 and induce a draught of air to enter the openings 26 and flow over the fins of the radiator to cool the barrel. The trapping of the gases in the passage 30 silences the report and extinguishes the flash accompanying the discharge, the flash being screened from view by the inturned lip 16 at the front of the casing 4. The rear end of the casing 4 fits over the front end 13 of the receiver 12, and is tightened by a band 15. The'barrel is guided during recoil by wings 8, 10.
