Description

(54) FILTER (71) We, CROSLAND FILTERS LIMITED, a British Company, of Glaisdale Drive, Bilborough, Nottingham, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a filter intended primarily (but not exclusively) for use in filtering air which is consumed in an internal combustion engine, the object of the invention being to provide such a filter in an improved form.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a filter comprising a generally cuboidal filter element formed of material which is arranged in a series of parallel straight pleats, together with a frame in which said filter element is located, said frame comprising two end plates which each extend longitudinally in a direction parallel to the length of said plates and which are each shaped to provide a flange which grips the adjacent pleat of the filter element, and two side plates which are each of channel-shaped configuration in cross-section and which are each secured to the adjacent set of ends of all of said pleats by means of a heat softenable adhesive substance provided in the interior of the channel, said substance sealing said adjacent set of pleat ends.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of one example of a filter constructed in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, on a larger scale, of part of the filter seen in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown therein a filter 10 having a filter element 11 which is formed from pleated material such as plated resin impregnated paper of any known form, said element being of generally cuboidal configuration arranged so that each pleat extends across the width of the element.
The filter element is located within a metal frame which is formed from two end plates 12 and 13 and two side plates 14 and 15. Said end plates and side plates are conveniently formed of metal and may be for example formed of aluminium or stainless steel or zinc plated mild steel or tin plated mild steel or of any other convenient material. The end plates 12 and 13 are folded to provide a pair of flanges such as 12a and 12b one flange of which, namely flange 12b, is bent to grip an end pleat so that the two end plates are secured respectively to the two end pleats of the filter element 11. The two side plates 14 and 15 each comprise a pair of flange portions integrally connected by a web portion so as to be of channel-shaped configuration in cross-section, two two ends of the web portion of each side plate being bent inwardly as indicated by reference numeral 16 so as to form a shallow tray and the interior of such tray is partially filled with an adhesive substance which is softenable and curable by heat. Said substance may for example be nitrile phenolic which is arranged so that it can be softened and cured by heat within the temperature range of 140-200"C and preferably within the range of 160-165"C. Alternatively a plastisol or a thixotropic p.v.c. can be used. Such materials are however stated by way of example only and any suitable heat softenable adhesive substance can be used.
In assembling the filter the aforesaid end plates 12 and 13 are secured to the end pleats of the previously formed generally cuboidal pleated filter element and the two side plates 14 and 15 are then applied to the opposite sides of said filter element whilst the whole assembly is held in a convenient jig, said two sides of the filter element projecting into the interiors of the tray-like side plates 14 and 15 with the ends of the pleats engaging the aforesaid heat softenable adhesive substance. Heat is then applied to said side plates to soften and cure said substance so as to secure the side plates in position on the filter element and at the same time seal the ends of the pleats.
The present invention thus provides a filter which is formed of a generally cuboidal pleated filter element and an associated frame, the latter being assembled and secured to the filter element in a very simple manner.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A filter comprising a generally cuboidal filter element formed of material which is arranged in a series of parallel straight pleats, together with a frame in which said filter element is located, said frame comprising two end plates which each extend longitudinally in a direction parallel to the length of said pleats and which are each shaped to provide a flange which grips the adjacent pleat of the filter element, and two side plates which are each of channel-shaped configuration in cross-section and which are each secured to the adjacent set of ends of all of said pleats by means of a heat softenable adhesive substance provided in the interior of the channel, said substance sealing said adjacent set of pleat ends.
2. A filter as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the two ends of the web portion of each side plate are bent inwardly to form with the remainder of said web portion and the flanges of the side plate a shallow tray.
3. A filter substantially as hereinbeofre described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.

Claims (3)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. two side plates 14 and 15 are then applied to the opposite sides of said filter element whilst the whole assembly is held in a convenient jig, said two sides of the filter element projecting into the interiors of the tray-like side plates 14 and 15 with the ends of the pleats engaging the aforesaid heat softenable adhesive substance. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
