Abstract

An optical cable is subjected to a bend test in which the cable (12) is wound under tension onto a cylindrical mandrel (10) and is unwound from the latter, the mandrel being provided with a helical groove (22). The axis of the mandrel is inclined to the horizontal at an angle equal to the pitch angle of the helix, with the result that the cable, which is tensioned by a weight, always meets the groove at a point where the latter extends vertically. During rotation, the mandrel is displaced laterally so as to avoid the lateral displacement of the suspended part of the cable, thereby preventing the weight loading the cable from beginning to oscillate like a pendulum. The optical transmission properties of the cable are monitored during the bend test. <IMAGE>
