Abstract

182,574. Steele, W. R. April 7, 1921. Coiling and uncoiling.-Cables, ropes, &c. are given an initial twist during winding on a former so as to prevent kinking when they are uncoiled from a stationary coil. This twist is opposite and substantially equal to that developed during uncoiling from a stationary coil formed in the ordinary manner. The cable A<x>, Fig. 3, is delivered from a feed-drum B, journaled in a gimbal frame B<1>, through a hollow trunnion b<1 >of the frame B<1> to a former drum A mounted on a shaft A', which is rotated by crank handles or other operating-gear. The former drum is constructed as shown in Fig. 2. A belt a<3> working over pulley a<2>, b' rotates the gimbal frame; the gear-ratio should be one revolution of the gimbal frame for each revolution of the former. An adjustable brake B<x> on the drum B maintains a slight tension in the cable. If the coil, after winding, is supported in a container, no lashing is necessary to prevent the individual coils from falling apart during uncoiling by pulling the inner end.
