Abstract
1532650 Growing plants A VERVAENE 30 Dec 1975 [3 Jan 1975] 53149/75 Heading A1E A cohesive layer of a porous material such as felt is used, with or without a layer of growth medium, as a base for seeds to grow grass or other plants in a form suitable for cutting into mats which are rolled for transporting, the cohesive layer being disposed over a porous material impervious to the roots of the plants. In Fig. 1, a felt layer 2, which allows water to pass to seeds 6 in a growth medium layer 3, is placed on top of a water-retaining porous layer 1 of cellular concrete, containing irrigation channels, and impervious to roots 4. After grass 5 has grown, it is mown several times before layers 2, 3 are cut into strips and rolled up. Alternatively, seeds may be sown on top of the felt layer or between two felt layers and the growth medium is omitted. The cellular concrete may be replaced by a water pervious layer comprising non-woven glass fibres held together by a synthetic resin.
