Abstract

The growing of plants in which a porous growing substrate is enclosed by plastic sheeting in bag form is used for root development, whilst the plant stem goes through an opening in the bag, and in which the growing substrate is continuously supplied with water containing additive substances necessary for plant growth, and the water leaves the bag through one or more openings in the bag at the opposite end to the stem opening, is undertaken with the bag oriented in an essentially vertical direction. For this purpose a growing bag is used comprising a plastic bag with opening for the plant stem at one end and with one or more openings at the other end. The bag contains a porous growing substrate and is designed and made for vertical suspension. The bag is made of opaque, especially light-reflective material. With the method, nutrient solution is introduced rapidly past the roots, and crop-bearing plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons and beans can be grown with a high crop yield. When growing, the spacing of the plants can be adjusted according to the development stage of the plants.
