Abstract

1531552 Fuel/air mixture control NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 30 March 1976 [1 April 1975] 12695/76 Headings F1B and F1H In a spark ignition engine 10 having at least two spark-plugs per cylinder and having exhaust gas recirculation means 44, 48, the air/fuel ratio of the mixture supplied by carburetter 32 is controlled in response to an exhaust gas composition sensor 86 so as to be maintained at stoichiometric. Solenoids 78, 80 are operable to reduce or increase the air-flow through auxiliary air bleeds 66, 76 to the main fuel well 58 and the idle fuel passage 62 in response to control signals from unit 84. The sensor 86 may be responsive to oxygen, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or to hydrocarbons. The sparking plugs 22 are located diametrically opposite with respect to the combustion chamber and the exhaust valve ports of each cylinder pair lead to a siamesed exhaust passage 36. A catalytic converter, or afterburner may follow the exhaust sensor to treat the exhaust gases.
