Abstract

1520178 Exhaust gas purifying systems NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 20 April 1976 [15 May 1975] 15877/76 Heading F1B To maintain the exhaust gas temperature in the thermal reactor 18 of a multi-cylinder I.C. engine having a high rate of exhaust gas recirculation, the exhaust passages 20 are 'siamesed' and fitted with heat shields 50 which register with the shield 54 in the reactor. Extra air to oxidize the unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide is introduced via duct 38 from manifold 36 supplied by pump 28 through check valve 34. A control valve 32 responsive to manifold or carburettor venturi vacuum or reactor temperature is included. Exhaust gas recirculation control valve 24 may be governed by the carburettor venturi vacuum and two spark plugs 42 per cylinder are supplied, symetrically disposed about the cylinder axis. Further spark plugs may be supplied. To maintain reactor temperature in the required range 850 - 950‹ during idle, mixture enrichment, ignition retardation, or exhaust valve tuning may be adjusted. The exhaust gas recirculation rate is 12% to 40% of the volume of air drawn into the induction system at zero recirculation.
