Abstract

152,584. Carling, W. T. April 1, 1920. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is rendered automatically variable by the division of the driving force between two opposing sets of epicyclic gears of different ratios. A worm-wheel p loose on the drum shaft c of the gearing is connected by a sleeve p<1> to a planet cage g. Planet gears i, k carried by the cage g mesh respectively with a gear h upon a sleeve a, which is the driving-element of the gearing, and with a gear l connected by a sleeve m to a like gear n. A second loose planet cage o carries a spindle s with four gears t, r, u, and v. The gear t meshes with the gear n. The gear r is connected through a trainq<7> - - q<3> to a worm q meshing with the wormwheel p. The gear u meshes with an internal ring f carried by a revoluble casing d. The gear v meshes with a gear w connected by a sleeve x to a sun gear y. A third planet cage 2 secured to the shaft c carries planet gears z, 3 meshing respectively with the gear y and with a second internal ring e upon the casing d. A fly-wheel may be used to assist the change in the speed ratio. Worm gearing may be substituted for spur gearing.
