Abstract
1520181 Tunnel linings L I D LLEWELLYN 4 June 1976 23129/76 Heading E1F A building element, for use in forming annular tunnel linings, comprises a segment 1 having angularly spaced end faces 2, 3, lying e.g. in radial planes of the lining to be formed, radially spaced inner and outer faces 5, 4, and axially spaced front and rear faces 6, 7, the segment 1 including at a position intermediate its end faces 2, 3 a cylindrical joint member 10 whose axis extends in the front to rear direction of the segment and of only slightly less diameter than the spacing of the inner and outer faces 5, 4. The joint member 10 has its cylindrical outer face spaced from the inner and outer faces 5, 4 of the segment 1 and is of greater compression strength than the segment 1. The segment 1 is preferably provided with recesses 11, 12 at the faces 4, 5 adjacent the outer face of the joint member 10. When the assembled lining deforms, the two halves 1a, 1b of the segment 1 move about the joint member 10 acting as journal, but wire mesh reinforcement 13, 14 is preferably included to increase the strength of the element for handling and erection. The joint member 10 may be of concrete or it may be a metal pipe 10a which can be filled with concrete or left empty. A coating layer 9 of e.g. bitumen emulsion or polyvinylacetate emulsion may be provided between the joint member 10 and the segment 1, and the joint member 10 may be axially offset relative to the faces 6, 7 to allow keying of neighbouring segments 1. In making the elements, the pipe 10a may be cast in the segment, or a steel cylinder may be cast in the segment and removed while the concrete is still 'green', the coating 9 being applied and further concrete of greater compression strength being then cast in the passage. In forming a tunnel lining, abutting end faces 2, 3 of neighbouring segments 1 are provided with a layer of quick-setting epoxy resin adhesive, and filler is applied between the ring of segments 1 and the rock face.
