Abstract

1290058 Tunnelling apparatus B WEISS and R WEISS 25 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 30963/70 Heading E1F Apparatus for forming underground passages comprises a pressing station 7 including steel housing 8 supporting hydraulic jacks 10 whose rams 12 press on tubular elements 13a, 13b to force a steel cutting ring (not shown) and tubular members 6 through the ground. An element 13a, having an axial length less than the stroke of the rams, or an element 13b, having an axial length at least equal to twice the stroke of the rams, is installed after each stroke of the rams is completed. Alternatively a further member 6 may be installed after each stroke. Elements 13a, 13b may be made from centrifugally cast concrete, for example having a compression strength of at least 1,000 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP>, which may include a synthetic resin material. The elements may be reinforced by centrifugally embedded spiral steel members 14, and may have metal rings 15 at either end.
