Abstract
1514118 Cleaning ships hulls F URAKAMI 16 Dec 1976 [18 Dec 1975 19 Jan 1976 26 Feb 1976] 52555/76 Heading B7M [Also in Division B3] A device which adheres to a wall surface by suction and moves over it, e.g. for cleaning a ship, comprises a housing 2, Fig. 3, which is sealed to the wall by a flexible member 14, a duct 20 for exhausting the housing and wheels 8a-8d, Fig. 1, which blow on the wall and are driven to move the device. The friction between the wheels and the wall is greater than the friction between the member 14 and the wall so that movement is not impeded by the member 14. As described, the member 14 is supported by an annular member 12, Fig. 4, which deflects readily in the direction of the arrow A. A pressure relief valve 24, Fig. 1, opens to reduce the vacuum inside the device if it exceeds a pre-set limit. Endless tracks may replace the wheels. Figs. 5-8 (not shown), illustrate various constructions of the member 14. The rigid housing 2 may be split into two positions joined together by flexible means, 114f, Fig. 11, the two portions being pivoted to a frame 116. Fig. 13 shows a similar embodiment in which the two halves of the frame 106a, 106b, are pivoted together. Figs. 14-19 (not shown), illustrate further embodiments of a similar nature. Fig. 20 shows diagrammatically a device for working under water. Fig. 21 shows a nozzle 550 for providing a jet of abrasive powder mounted on a suction device. Fig. 22 shows a device with a wheel 660 which throws shot centrifugally onto a wall to be cleaned which is mounted on a suction device. The shot is returned to a holder 664 by the suction which holds the device on the wall 604. In Fig. 23 shot is thrown against a wall 704 by a wheel 776 and is returned by suction to a hopper 786. Dust and scale pass out through a duct 793 and air enters to entrain the shot through a duct 799.
