Abstract
1507076 Aerials, radar THOMSON-CSF 16 June 1975 [18 June 1974] 25642/75 Headings H4A and H4D [Also in Division B7] Radar apparatus mounted in a submarine utilizes an antenna 10 mounted on a retractable/extensible mast 3. A microwave feeder 25 runs through the mast and connects, via rotary joint 20 antenna 10 to radar transmitter/receiver 8 comprising units 26 and 28 which are mounted on the lower extremity of the mast and are electrically connected to the radar console 9 by flexible cable 27, such that the radar is operational only when the mast is in an extended position, Fig. 2b. A piston 6 attached to a bottom support 7 is located within internal mast section 24 and is used to extend the external mast section 21 above the submarine superstructure 2. The mast passes through pressure hull 1, via sealing flange 4 and the external portion 21 is guided through sheath 23 by a guide flange 25. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the mast is elevated by steel cables operated by a motor (29), and is arranged so that both antenna, radar/transmitter and mast are rotatable, a rotatable connection being provided for the connection to the radar of the flexible cable. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the cabinet for the radar includes a central axial recessed portion for incorporating the mast therein.
