Abstract
1504279 Charging IC engines; lubricating pistons H LITZ 27 Jan 1975 48406/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A four-stroke I.C. engine comprises a cylinder 31 with a combustion chamber 34 having intake and exhaust valves 15, 43; a crank-case 50 enclosing a crank-case chamber of generally cylindrical shape, the crank-case and cylinder forming a compression chamber for compressing air, or air fuel mixture for use in the combustion chamber; a crank-shaft 51 in the crank-case 50 having an exterior surface contour which substantially matches the interior surface contour of the crank-case; a piston 30 slidable in the cylinder to cause above atmospheric pressure in the compression chamber on its down stroke and below atmospheric pressure therein on its up stroke. A conduit which may be a holding chamber 16a communicates with the combustion chamber intake valve 15 and the crank-case chamber via a one-way valve 40, the crank-case chamber also communi- cating via a one-way valve 4 with a source of air or mixture, the valve 4 opening automatically when the compression chamber pressure is below atmospheric pressure and the valve 40 opening automatically when the compression chamber pressure is above the holding chamber pressure. The piston is lubricated by carrying oil from a source via a lift tube 20 associated with the connecting rod 19 linking piston 30 and crank-shaft 51. Oil passes via port 22, Fig. 7, non-return valve 22a and tube 20 with riffles 21 to port 24 leading to channel 13a in wrist pin 14 on which the piston is mounted, the oil then passing via passageways 11 to the periphery of the piston 30. The riffles 21 splash oil upwards during operation of the engine. The oil is carried to the port 22 through crank-shaft 51 and along connecting rod bearing 17. Alternatively the piston may be lubricated via oil holes 2 in its periphery or oil may be added to the charge entering the compression chamber to lubricate the interior walls of the cylinder 31 and the wrist pin 14. The crank-shaft 51 is balanced by having holes (not shown), bored therein, which are sealed or filled with lightweight material so as not to increase the volume of the crank-case chamber.
